Father Johni’s book ‘The Table of the Word’ inspires every reader for a better personal living. Exploring the book, one will find twists on conventional presentations. For example, during the season of Lent, tradition encourages the giving up or denial of some activity. Fr. Johni says we can equally well “take-up:” support of a food-bank, kindness and compassion towards others, tolerance and understanding of the issues facing neighbors or work colleagues. In another story, a veteran returning from the war calls his parents to say he wants to bring a friend with him. “Sure” they say “we would love to meet him.” That was, until they found out the friend was handicapped and therefore would be an inconvenience. When they told the son this, he did not go home. The end of the story is not pleasant and provides us all with fodder to contemplate how we, ourselves, react to situations. The style of Fr. Johni’s writing will appeal to many: preachers and teachers looking for ideas and material, seekers of all persuasions, people of faith, those of non-belief or doubt and for those who want to get more from life.”
